Rest Up
Travelling internationally in the past few weeks reminded me of the restrictions faced by flight crews and airlines when rostering staff and responding to changes in schedules. Associates were due to fly in, but the previous international flight was delayed. This delay had a knock-on effect because the flight crew would be working over their permitted hours, resulting in a cancellation of the next flight while the airline sought a new crew to operate the plane.
It is not deemed safe for a flight crew to work too many hours without a proper break. How many of us would perform better if we followed that rule?
At this time of year, we start to see the tiredness of a long year creeping in. Many of us are trying to push through until the Christmas break. Some of us start to burn the candle at both ends of the day, as partying and socialising extends our waking hours. Some of us are energised by the fun, while others are exhausted.
You know yourself. Read your signs. Eat fresh food and drink lots of water. Remember to laugh. And if you are managing others, be aware of their signs. Lead by example through this silly season.
