Getting the House in Order
Recently I was running a Strategy Day with a client. They had flown people in from interstate and overseas and were keen to find a common direction and plan for the future of the business. It was an honour to be asked to facilitate.
I introduced the participants to the concept of a Strategy House. It is a diagrammatic way of representing the business strategy, showing the direction the company is heading, the foundational aspects, and the key pillars that need to be built or maintained.
There are many variations on this model. Many are confusing, but the right one can really help an organisation direct their short term focus toward solving longer term issues and preparing for the future.
It’s not easy to keep the thinking at the strategic level in a Strategy Day. Instinctively we like jumping to Tactical planning, solving the problems at hand. The job of the facilitator is to keep the team on track and bring them back when they stray.
A house will only keep standing if the foundations are sure and the pillars are strong. Is your house in order?
