Future: a time that is to come

When my grandmother was a child, she would make ice cream by milking a cow and leaving the cream outside overnight to freeze. Ice cream for breakfast – yum! She passed away in 2000, having lived over ninety years in the 20th century. In her lifetime she saw so much change – from the invention of the motor car, television, space travel, to microwave ovens, VCRs and ATMs!

In my children’s short lifetimes, they have seen an even faster pace in technological and social change. From smartphones, social media, and video calls, to self-serve checkouts, cashless payments and many more.

The future starts now, and it’s changing rapidly. To be fit for the future requires both agility and constancy. We need to understand there are some skills that can’t be outsourced to a computer, and others that are wasting our time and energy.

This weekly article aims to explore what we need to be “fit” for now and the future – what can we do to feel healthy and strong as things change around us. It will explore what we need to “fit” in the future – as we grow how can we keep up with change appropriately. It will also be looking at organisational “fitness” – what essentials do businesses need to ensure they flourish.
