Continually Enhance

Organisational excellence is not an end game, rather it is a journey that a business can travel on that consists of continually enhancing business processes and the services or products delivered.

Do you understand you core business? What is it that your business does? Have you improved how you do that over time?

Let me pose another question to you – how do you know you’ve improved? So you implemented that new software. Great, what did that improve?

To enhance a business’ performance, you need to be measuring it. There will be a few key pieces of data that will tell you how well you are doing. Profitability might seem obvious, but some measure revenue. They often relate but they are not the same thing.

You might also measure employee engagement. This can be through staff turnover, productivity and efficiency rates, or survey results. I’m not going to tell you what your business needs to measure, but I will suggest that if you have identified a problem or an area that you would like to improve then you need to measure it to have an idea where you are starting from.

Or perhaps you don’t have any problems. You’ve been running this business for years and it’s going really well. This is the time to Enhance. I’m not talking radical change, I’m talking about the fine tuning on what is already working. The old saying goes “if it aint broke don’t fix it”. But the world is continually changing, people move on, technology advances, and competitors rise and fall.

I’m not saying you need to change the way you do business, just be prepared to do a little enhancing to get you up the next hill.
